-Abstract
The prediction interval approach is used to derive variable acceptance sampling plans when the underlying distribution is exponential. Three acceptance criteria are considered. For all three plans a random sample of a predetermined size is taken from the lot under inspection. It is assumed that the overall quality of the lot is adequately represented by some characteristic of the unsampled portion of the lot. It is also assumed that an item is said to be defective if its lifetime is less than some specified acceptance limit which is specified prior to the commencement of the life test. An alternative approach for the same exponential model is developed aiming at obtaining optimal values for the sample size to be selected and acceptable limit for employing economic variable acceptance sampling plans based on step-loss function to measure the loss due to imperfect product quality.
