Abstract

The research aims to shed light on the use of vertical aspect ratios in films, which has become one of the requirements of the current age, as display media, represented by portable communication devices and electronic panels, have become the most widespread in the world. The same in the past with the invention of home televisions with proportions closer to the square and the subsequent changes in film productions to conform to the new proportions back then.
The research also discussed societal and philosophical terms associated with the idea of horizontality and verticality and a comparison between them. It also linked them to the choice of vertical and horizontal cutting in the film industry.
The research presents a number of paintings characterized by the presence of a dramatic situation and demonstrates how it is achieved through vertical cutting without disrupting most of the dramatic plastic concepts. It also covers the beginnings of the film industry, the indications of vertical cutting in some of the shots that preceded the approval of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for horizontal cutting and the official lineage of that nascent industry, all the way to the technological advances that led to the return of the vertical cutting in modern-day devices.
