Abstract

The rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae and the red flour beetle, Tribolium casteneum are key stored-product pests worldwide, including in Egypt. Preference test under free-choice and non-choice conditions were conducted to study the host preference of these pests among different hosts (sorghum, wheat, maize and barley) to assess their vulnerability. In the free-choice test, wheat grain was the most preferred type for S. oryzae with 61.06% of the total number of tested individuals, while maize was the least preferred type at 8.82%. However, in the case of T. castaneum, maize was the most preferred type at 49.65% while barley was the least preferred type at 4.17%. In the non-choice test, sorghum  had the highest loss (14.12% after 6 months of storage) followed by maize and wheat for S. oryzae, while barley was highly resistant (8.87% after 6 months) followed by sorghum, which was found to be the most susceptible,  showing a higher weight loss (33.75% after 6 months) followed by wheat. The present results show that, the differences in chemical and physical characteristics of the tested cereals play an important role in the preference of S. oryzae and T. castaneum for their hosts.
