Ghazal is a form of poetry quite familiar to Urdu reader who easily understands the difference between Ghazal and other genres of poetry in Urdu like Qaseedah, Mathnavi, Nazm, etc. But, to the Arabs, Ghazal has been merely a subject among others used in the only form of Arabic poetry, Qaseedah, which classically included Ghazal, Fakhr, Hamaasah, Madeeh, Wasf, Ratha, Hija, E'tizaar and Hikmah. Although some later Arab poets, like 'Umar bin Abi Rabee'ah, solely snag Ghazal in their Qaseedas, but the Qaseedah remained to be known as Qaseedah marked here with the adjective "ghazaliyyah" (amatory). But the Urdu Ghazal, to the contrary, is recognized as a genre in itself, not merely the exotic prelude with which the Qaseedah was generally opened. This Urdu Ghazal followed the pattern of Persian Ghazal that was detached from Qaseedah and provided with a symbolic connotation of mystic nature initially. Later, a variety of subjects were used in this Ghazal as a separate genre, which then was adopted in Urdu as it was, side by side with Qaseedah and surpassed the latter in its popularity and adoptability to every kind of notions and subjects. This article takes a look at this Ghazal, describing it to the Arab reader who is generally not acquainted with the different nature of it in Persian, and especially in Urdu. The second part of the article comprises some specimens of Urdu Ghazal rendered into Arabic from the Ghazals of the great Urdu poet of all times Mirza Asadullah Khan
