Thermal and electrical properties of Cr doped Cd-Cu nano-ferrites samples

Abstract

Cr substituted Cd - Cu nano-ferrite materials (Cd0.5Cu0.5CrxFe2-xO4 with x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8) were successfully fabricated by the co-precipitation technique. XRD, TGA, and DC electrical measurements were utilized to identify the synthesized nano samples. XRD examination indicated that the produced samples are cubic spinel with a single phase face-centered cubic crystal structure. The crystallite size determined from XRD data by the Scherrer formula was calculated in range of 14.8-22.6 nm. However, the estimated size of the nanoparticles by SEM was found in the range of 37.5-52.5 nm. As indicated by TGA graphs, the average activation energy of the four stages of weight loss of decomposition is 1.39, 6.53, 39.14, and 40.21 (KJ/mol). The room temperature conductivity decreased gradually from 7.34 × 10-7 Ω-1 cm-1 for (Cr00) sample to 2.24 × 10-8 Ω-1 cm-1 for (Cr80) sample, while the values of activation energy were found in the range from 0.349-0.407 eV. All of the samples' temperature-dependent DC-electrical conductivity exhibited semiconductor-like behavior. As a result, Cd-Cu doped materials may be suitable for limiting eddy current losses.
