Evaluation of Paraoxonase 1 Serum Level in Male Androgenetic Alopecia Patients

Abstract

Background: Male androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is characterized by progressive hair loss. Oxidative stress has been noticed in dermal papilla cells of AGA patients. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) plays an important role as an antioxidant by preventing oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). PON1 serum concentration is influenced by inflammatory changes and serum levels of oxidized LDL. The present study aimed to measure serum PON1 in male AGA patients and compare its level with healthy controls.
Patients and Methods: This case-control study included sixty male patients complaining of AGA and twenty age and sex healthy volunteers as a control. They were selected from those attending the Outpatient Clinic of Dermatology Department of Benha University Hospitals during the period from April 2020 to December 2021.
Results: Serum PON1 and HDL were significantly lower in AGA patients than controls
Conclusion: The study concluded that the lower level of PON1 reported in AGA patients may be due to increased oxidative stress.
