Abstract

          Context:    A cervical herniated disc can cause many different types of pain and it is the most common cause of neck and arm pain, it occurs also anywhere along the spine and cause defects of daily living activities in patients. Educational program was developed to improve health outcomes for cervical disc herniation patients.  Aim: This    study    aimed    to    evaluate    the effectiveness of applying an educational program on health outcomes for patients with cervical disc herniation. Design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized.  Setting: the study was carried out at the orthopedic department at Benha University Hospitals. Subjects: A purposive subject of 33 patients of both sexes who were admitted in the orthopedic department and diagnosed   with cervical disc herniation. Tools: Two tools were used for data collection include Tool I: Patients' Structured Questionnaire assessment divided into two parts; part one: Patients' socio demographic data, part two: patients' knowledge assessment about cervical disc herniation, Tool II: Patient health outcome divided into two parts; part one: Barthel index scale of daily living activities and part two: Quality of life questionnaire. Results: It showed a statistically significance improvement in patient's knowledge, activities of daily living and quality of life post implementing of program compared to pre implementation (P- value =0.000**) and a positive significant correlation between patients' knowledge and daily living activities was found post implementing of an educational program. Conclusion: Implementing of an educational program  for cervical disc herniation patients had improved of patients' health outcomes through high significantly increased level of their knowledge,  practice and quality of life. Recommendations:    Developing and designing an in-service training program for nurses' staff members on applying the evidence-based nursing practice in the field of nursing care including, especially for patients with cervical disc herniation.
