Correlation between Psychological Problems, Self-esteem and Quality of Life among Children with Chronic Renal Failure.

Abstract

    Background: Chronic renal failure among children is considered a serious problem that causes many negative changes not only physical but also, psychological which negatively affect their self-esteem and quality of life. Aim of the study: This study aimed to assess the correlation between psychological problems, self-esteem and quality of life among children with chronic renal failure. Research question: What is the correlation between psychological problems, self-esteem and quality of life among children with chronic renal failure? Design: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized in this study. Setting: This study was conducted at children renal dialysis unit, at Benha university hospital which affiliated to Ministry of High Education, Benha City, Qalyubia governorate. Sample: A purposive sample of (100) children with chronic renal failure were taken from the above-mentioned setting.  Tools: Tool (1): A structured Interviewing Questionnaire Sheet, Tool (11): Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS), Tool (111): Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale: and Tool (V): Quality of life Scale. Results:  Findings revealed that less than two thirds of the studied children had moderate level of psychological problems (depression, anxiety and stress) and more than half of them had low levels of self-esteem and quality of life. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it was concluded that there was a highly statistically significant negative correlation between total psychological problems and total self-esteem and total quality of life scales, while there was a highly statistically significant positive correlation between total self-esteem and total quality of life scales among the studied children. Recommendation: Psycho-educational program should be an integral part of comprehensive care for all children with chronic renal failure to decrease their psychological problems and enhance their self-esteem and quality of life.
