على الرغم من انتشار استخدام مصطلح البيئة فى السنوات الأخيرة ؛ إلا أن المفهوم الدقيق له ما يزال غامضا لاسيما أنه لا يوجد تعريف محدد يبين لنا ماهية البيئة، ويحدد مجالاتها المختلفة ؛ لذا نحاول فى الصفحات التالية التعرض لمصطلح البيئة كي نقف على أبعاده المعرفية، ونشير أيضاً إلى خصائص الفلسفة البيئية، والعلم والتكنولوجيا ومشكلة البيئة، والوعى البيئى، وأخلاقيات البيئة.
يعود الأصل اللغوي لكلمة البيئة في اللغة العربية إلى الجذر " بوأ " و منه الفعل الماضي " باءَ " قيل " باء إلى الشيء يبــوء بوءاً " أي رجع، والاسم : البيئة وتبوأت منزلاً أي اتخذته، وقوله تعالى {والذين تبؤوا الدار والإيمان }،
