يجمع الباحثون المتخصصون في مجال الأدب والنقد لاسيما في العصر الحديث على أن أهم ما يميز الشعر عن بقية فنون الأدب عنصران اثنان "الموسيقى والصورة، وبل لقد ذهب معظمهم أن الشعر في جوهره تعبير بالصور، فالصورة ثابتة في كل القصائد، وكل قصيدة هي بحد ذاتها صورة فالاتجاهات تأتي وتذهب، والأسلوب يتغير كما يتغير نمط الوزن حتى الموضوع الجوهري يمكن أن يتغير بدون إدراك ولكن المجاز يأتي للحياة في القصيدة كمقياس رئيسي لمجد الشاعر.
