Abstract

Considerable number of theories have been successful in providing explanation for the different aspects of language. One of the most essential theories is Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics. According to O'Donnell (as cited in Almurashi, 2016, p. 71), the SFL approach is used in a wide range of researches and for different purposes such as discourse analysis. For Bloor and Bloor (2004, p. 64), organizing how information is structured in communication to make it easier for the hearer or reader to understand, and to avoid confusion is the main aspect of a functional grammar. Therefore, the present study is concerned with elaborating Halliday's independent patterns of organizing information: the Theme-Rheme structure and Given + New structure of the English clause. It illustrates the concepts of Theme and Rheme, illustrating how a clause could be organized to reflect a certain message and fit together with the other messages of the text. It explains the Theme in declarative clauses, distinguishing between marked and unmarked Theme. It sheds light on the different types of Themes: textual, interpersonal and topical, referring to different categories of non-topical element in thematic position. Moreover, it explains the Given and New structure in written English, elaborating the conflation between Given + New and Theme + Rheme. It illustrates the Theme in bound and embedded clauses. It explains the different patterns of thematic progression. Finally, it presents some prominent examples taken from Trump's first impeachment in the U.S. House of Representatives, and analyzes them in the light of Hallidayan approach.
