Abstract

As a reflection for the depletion of the conventional hydrocarbon resources in connection to the global increase demand of energy, shale oil and gas prospectivity is becoming a worldwide growing concern. The Obayied sub-basin, including Obayied field forms a considerable share of the Western Desert gas production. However, on studying the well logs and related petrophsics in 8 selected wells, occurrences of retained gas are clearly remarked within the Jurassic shales of Khatatba formation. The thicknesses of the probable gas pay zones within such shaley intervals mounted up to 12 m in the JC 17-2 well. Multiple scenarios could be derived on the spatial tracing of such a parameter. With the exception of the Oba JB 18-1 well, the calculated volume of shale (Vsh) reveals a smooth increase eastward. The values of geochemical parameters (TOC and Tmax) for the studied gas shale in 2 wells, indicate a very good to excellent sourcing capabilities and a corresponding thermal maturation wet-gas window. Consequentially, this defines the Khatatba shale gas to be retained in its own source organofacies and these bearing gas shale intervals as unconventional gas resources.
