Abstract

Background: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a serious clinical problem among children, also occurring in adult patients with potentially high morbidity and mortality rates. Aim and objectives: The objective of our study was to determine the accuracy and reliability of the clinical signs and correlating them to the rigid bronchoscopy and imaging findings in order to Rach the optimum criteria that will enable us in the future to avoid unnecessary bronchoscopy and increase the rate of positive bronchoscopies. Reduce the drawbacks of rigid bronchoscopy, including its invasiveness and the potential for exacerbation of reactive airway disease. Subjects and methods: This was a cross-Sectional Study conducted during a period of 6 months starting from October 2021. Totally 50 cases were included in this study. This study was conducted at Otorhinolaryngology Department, Beni-Suef University Hospital. Results: suspected FB shadow in CT-scans has high sensitivity and specificity 95.12% and 80% respectively. Pneumonia and lung collapse have high specificity but with low sensitivity. Conclusion: Especially when occurring in a young child. Early diagnosis and immediate control by a specialized team are essential for ensuring correct treatment, which is generally endoscopic, without any risk of complication. Rigid bronchoscopy is the gold standard tool for the management of foreign body aspiration with 96% successful retrieval rate.
