Abstract

Abstract: Interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) are preferred for electric vehicle traction systems. In this paper, two layers permanent magnet IPMSM designed to achieve electric vehicle requirements. Firstly, overall dimensions of the proposed motor calculated, then sensitivity applied to tune machine dimensions. Secondly, electromagnetic analysis of proposed IPMSM is carried out. Motor performance under peak and rated power loading is compared. Flux density, electromagnetic torque, electric parameters, and cogging torque are evaluated and compared. Then, motor output power, torque, and efficiency are analyzed using vehicle model under standard drive cycle. Finally, thermal analysis is carried out using a water jet cooling system. The results prove that the proposed IPMSM has a wide speed range (14800 rpm). The machine has high efficiency reaches 97% under standard drive cycle. Thermal steady state and transient analysis show that peak power can be applied only for a small period while rated power can be applied for long time. Finite element method is used for electromagnetic and thermal analysis.
