Abstract:
Purpose: To evaluate the prevalence of Scapular dyskinesis among working dentists.
Methods: Quantitative and analytical Cross sectional study. Overall, 108 dentists of both genders with age ranged from 30-50years with normal BMI, no history of fractures, surgery or shoulder impingement at their upper limbs, not engaging in physical activity such as volleyball, basketball or tennis also not playing music were recruited and divided randomly into four equal groups. Using modified version of the Standardised Nordic Questionnaire, Salutogenic health indicator scale (SHIS) for risk factors of scapular dyskinesis, Digital inclinometer for measuring shoulder range of motion, Modified digital inclinometer for measuring posterior tilting of scapula during humeral elevation at rest,45º,90º,120º.
Results: There were statistically significant reductions in SHIS scores between the four groups and prevalence of scapular dyskinesis in their dominant side.
Conclusion: Scapular dyskinesis is prelevent in dentists which may be either due to overuse, weakness , improper posture or all of them. So educating dentists about correct posture while working and frequent performance of stretching and strengthening exercises to scapular muscles will help in preventing early muscle fatigue, pain and scapular dysfunction.
