Abstract

There is no effective and safe treatment for trichinellosis, especially for encapsulated muscle
larvae. This study investigated the effect of amlodipine (AML) and its combination with albend
azole (ABZ) in treatment of early and late trichinellosis in mice. Mice were divided into follow
ing groups: GI (negative control), GII (positive control), GIII: infected, treated with ABZ. GIV:
infected, treated with AML. GV: infected, treated with ABZ & AML. GsIII, IV & V were sub
divided into subgroups (a) started treatment on 3rd day PI for three successive days and was sac
rificed on 6th day PI and subgroups (b) started treatment on 21st day PI for three successive days
and was sacrificed on 35th day PI. Parasitological, histopathological, immunohistochemical and
immunological studies were done. The results showed that combined ABZ and AML gave the
best results as evidenced by decreasing mean adult and larval counts in intestine and muscles re
spectively. It significantly improved the inflammation and significant reduction of serum TNF-α
level in intestine and muscles. Also, it had a strong anti-angiogenic effect as it significantly de
creased the mean number of CD31 positive vessels in muscles (94.29%).
