Abstract

The majority of al-Murji'ah believes that deeds are of no value in the fulfillment of Imān. In this way, many sinful and disobedient people believe that they are safe from the bad consequences of their sins and acts of disobedience under the pretext that deeds have nothing to do with Imān. However, there are some advocates of al-Irjā' whose opinion on Imān was close to that of the People of the Sunnah. Those advocates are known as Murji'at Al-Sunnah, whose Irjā' was based on hoping that doers of major sins would be forgiven as a natural reaction to al-Khawārij and others who used to declare sinful people disbelievers. As such, they had hope and never declared people disbelievers. This paper sheds light on the emergence of al-Murji'ah, the political reasons that accompanied its origin, and the issues around which the topic of al-Irjā' revolved and discusses the attitude of al-Khaṭīb towards Murji'at al-Sunnah with special reference to Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān. It also examines Ibn Ṭahmān's efforts to answer the misconceptions of al-Jahmiyya.
