تهدف هذا الدراسة إلى التعرف على المبادئ والأسس الفلسفية والفكرية التي ارتكزت عليها فكرة الجامعة البحثية عند هومبولت، وفكرة جامعة الفنون الحرة عند نيومان، ومن خلال عرض فكرتي الجامعة عند هومبولت ونيومان، أكدت الدراسة الحالية أن فكرة جامعة البحث العلمي عند فون هومبولت تتوافق مع  فكرة التعليم الحر الذي دافع عنه جون هنري نيومان، وذلك في تمركزهما حول المفهوم النظري لفكرة الجامعة الذي ينظر إلى الجامعة كمؤسسة مكرسة للسعي الخالص وراء المعرفة، والذي يعتبر الهدف الأساسي للجامعة فيه هو البحث العلمي، أما الوظائف الأخرى التي يمكن أن تقوم بها الجامعة فهي ليست سوى أمور ووظائف عرضية، ويمكن اعتبارها وظائف للجامعة فقط بقدر اعتمادها على الوظيفة الرئيسية، أي السعي نحو التعلم والمعرفة. كما أوضحت الدراسة أيضًا أن الفكرتين يؤكدان على أن الجامعة هي في الأساس مؤسسة معنية بإنتاج معرفة جديدة، وتدريب الجيل القادم من الباحثين، بالإضافة إلى أنهما يركزان بشكل خاص على أهمية التعلم كغاية في حد ذاته: أي أن المعرفة ليست مجرد وسيلة لشيء ما يتجاوزها أو أبعد منها، أو تمهيد لفنون وآداب معينة التي يمكن الفصل بينها بشكل طبيعي، ولكنها غاية كافية للسعي في حد ذاته، ولذلك اتحدت جامعة نيومان الحرة وجامعة الأبحاث في تفانيهما في دراسة المعرفة النظرية كغاية في حد ذاتها، حتى ساهموا في تشكيل فكرة متكاملة لجامعات الجيل الثاني. This study aims to recognize the philosophical and intellectual principles and foundations on which the idea of the research university according to Humboldt, and the idea of the liberal arts university according to Newman, were based. By presenting the ideas of the university according to Humboldt and Newman, the current study confirmed that the idea of the scientific research university according to Wilhelm Humboldt is compatible with the idea of liberal education defended by John Henry Newman, in their focus on the theoretical concept of the idea of the university, which views the university as an institution dedicated to the pure pursuit of knowledge, in which the primary objective of the university is scientific research while the other functions that the university can perform can be considered functions of the university only to the extent that they depend on the main function, i.e. the pursuit of learning and knowledge. The study also shows that the two ideas also emphasize that the university is essentially an institution concerned with producing new knowledge; training the next generation of researchers, as well as focusing in particular on the importance of learning as an end in itself: that is, knowledge is not merely a means to something that transcends it or beyond it, or a prelude to certain arts and literatures that are naturally separable, but are a sufficient end to the pursuit in themselves. Therefore, the ideas of the liberal university and the research university were united in their dedication to the study of theoretical knowledge as an end in itself, so that they contributed to the formation of an integrated idea for second-generation universities.
