SPECIFICATIONS OF CANDIDATES ELIGIBLE FOR OCCUPYING THE JOB OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION WORKER

Abstract

The main objective of this research was to determine specifica‌tions of candidates required filling the job of agricultural extension agent. Those specifications comprise educational qualification, major needed to conduct job duties, past experience in agricultural work, requi‌site pre-service training, and different traits and characteristics needed to be acquired by anyone who occupies the job and make him qualified to deal with clients. The research population comprised agricultural extension experts who can have the capability of determination those specifications. The selected extension experts consisted of two groups: the first one was the academic experts with Ph.D. in agricultural extension and who work at Agricultural Extension Departments in the Agricultural colleges and the Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Research Institute. The second group was the executive experts in the Ministry of Agriculture and land reclamation who work as undersecretaries of central administra‌tion, sectors and general organizations. A stratified random sample amounted to (105 respondents) was drown. 50 Respondents out of them represented the first groirp and 55 respondents represented the second group. Data were collected by personal interview using a pretest‌ed questionnaire. Frequencies, Percentages, averages, Z test, Chi-Square, and contingency coefficient were used for analyzing data statistically. The main findings of this research could be summarized as foNows: The majority of respondents had consensus on the following specifications: 1. Acquiring B.Sc. in agriculture as a minimum. 2. Majoring in agricultural and in particular agricultural extension. 3. Having a past experience in farm work. 4. Having pre-service training. It should primarily emphasize acquisition of necessary extension skills for practicing the professions. 5. Availability of the following characteristics and traits ranked in a de‌scending order according to their relative importance as follows: truthfulness, self confidence, scientific confidence, achievement moti‌vation, fulfillment of promises. positive attitudes toward clients, self control, readiness to participate in serving others, elasticity, modesty, gentleness, self criticism, and rural origin. It was preferred to combine the three studied ways together (personal interview, Psychological tests, and investigation of the candi‌date's characteristics and traits for a known period to ensure availability of these traits and characteristics In those job nominees.
