Abstract

Background: Bronchial asthma is considered one of the major problems of health care systems in many countries. Asthma in particular, affects the quality of life, social and economic issues, and can lead to poor health outcomes. Self-care management is a keystone in asthma management. It helps patients achieve better control of their bronchial asthma symptoms and is vital for their overall health and well-being. Self-care module improves asthma knowledge and treatment adherence, decreases disease-related events, and improves the patient's self-efficacy. Aim: was to evaluate the effect of self-care module on selected outcomes among patients with bronchial asthma. Design: A quasi experimental (pre-posttest control group design) was utilized. Tools: Patient's Demographic and Medical background Questionnaires; Asthma patient's knowledge questionnaires; Morisky Medication Adherence Scale; and Self Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease. Setting: a study was carried out in the chest outpatient clinics at ElKaser El Aini Hospital, Cairo University -Egypt. Sample: A convenient sample of 60 adult male & female patients over six consecutive months. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the study and control groups after implementing the self-care module regarding patients' knowledge (χ2= 20.376, P- value= 0.000), medication adherence (χ2= 6.513, P- value = 0.039), and self-efficacy (χ2=21.337, P- value= 0.000). Conclusion: the self-care module has a positive significant effect on improving patients' asthma-related knowledge, medication adherence, and self-efficacy. Recommendation: Promotion and development of self-care modalities for patients with bronchial asthma. Replicating the study to a large sample size from diverse geographic areas is recommended.
