Abstract

Abstract: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders often have significant delays in communication. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is an established protocol in teaching beginning requesting behavior, where the child exchanges pictures of items to obtain them. This action research protocol was used to develop beginning requesting skills in a three-year-old child attending a state preschool program. There was an increase in the use of picture cards to express wants, and a decrease in inappropriate behaviors, reflecting findings of other research on PECS.
