Abstract

The purpose of this work is to conduct an intercultural quantitative and qualitative study of the usage of modal verbs as epistemic stance indicators in the AERAC (Arabic-English Research Article Corpus), a corpus of research articles (RAs) from several fields. This study's corpus comprises of 48 Business Management research papers. Special attention is placed on the introduction and discussion portions of RAs, where stance devices are most commonly used to promote audience convergence. This type of intercultural analysis was accomplished using both a bottom-up and a top-down research strategy. The findings of this study indicate that there are significant disparities in the usage of modal verbs by native authors and the use of modal verbs by non-native authors. The most notable feature is that Arabic writers use hedges and boosters in unusual ways. As a result, they struggle to develop a suitable tone while writing in English. to develop a suitable tone while writing in English.
