Abstract

This paper deals with the papyrus industry as one of the purple professions related to creative heritage and cultural industries. Embodying the purple economy concept, this industry is characterized by originality and creativity that represent the color purple in color symbolism . Al-Qaramous village in Al-Sharqiya Governorate was relied upon as a case study for this craft,.The questionnaire was used to obtain craftsmen's opinions from the local community in this village about the extent to which this village is developed in rare tourism (e.g., papyrus industry). Hence, 439 responses were obtained from these artisans assessing the potential relationship between the main dimensions of purple economic professions and sustainable tourism development through the mediating role of government support of papyrus craft and were analyzed using SmartPLS v.4.4. Findings from exploratory and composite factor analyses proved that purple economic professions can be measured according to five main dimensions: cultural, innovative, environmental, economic, and social. The results also showed that government support partly mediated the relationship between purple economic professions' dimensions and sustainable tourism development. As such, the results provide useful insights for tourism practitioners and academics in terms of working to raise the efficiency of the infrastructure and superstructure of Al-Qarmous village and establishing unified online marketing websites to display and sell traditional handicraft products locally and internationally, similar to Amazon. Moreover, the Egyptian government must spread awareness among youth about the focal role of culture and be keen to preserve it as an inherited asset for future generations.
