Abstract

Collisions between birds and aircraft cause great losses to the aviation industry and bird-watching tourism, climate change is affected by the collision of birds with the fuselage causing a great loss in the aviation industry, biodiversity, and bird-watching tourism, while collisions with aircraft engines and cockpits are likely to cause crashes Therefore, Egyptian airports must be provided with initial guidelines for preparing environmental studies, and providing optimal solutions for managing and controlling bird risks at airports are the main objectives of this study. Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport was selected as a model airport located on the same line of the most important migratory bird routes between Europe and Africa. An integrated bird risk management system has been followed and implemented in airports, the formation of a database, bird control activities including (habitat modification, animal transportation, and airport food chain stop), and promotion of safety and environmental culture. This indicates a significant decrease in the total number of birds monitored at the airport without affecting the natural environment of birds and places for bird watching, especially the two main types of residential and migratory birds, pigeons and white storks, respectively, over the study period from 2018 ~ 2022. It also led to a decrease Significant in the total number and severity of bird strikes over the same period. During this period without the impact of bird-watching tourism, it was observed that the number of confirmed bird strike damages decreased significantly despite the continuous recording of both confirmed and unconfirmed cases
