Efficacy of Hematological Biomarkers as Prognostic Factors for the Severity and Mortality of COVID-19 Patients at Suez Canal University Hospital

Abstract

Background: The global healthcare systems have faced considerable challenges due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. It is essential to comprehend the prognostic factors linked to disease severity and mortality for the effective management and treatment of individuals affected by coronavirus disease 2019.Aim: To assess the effectiveness of the laboratory biomarkers as prognostic factors for the severity and mortality of COVID-19 patients at Suez Canal University Hospital. Subjects and Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study on COVID-19 patients admitted to Suez Canal University Hospital Isolation Centre was conducted. Data on hematological biomarkers, including complete blood count parameters, inflammatory markers, coagulation profiles, and organ-specific markers, were collected. The patients were classified based on disease severity and mortality outcomes. Statistical analyses were conducted to evaluate the correlation between hematological biomarkers and the outcomes of patients. Results: Throughout our study; It was found that IL-6, D-Dimer, ferritin, and Procalcitonin have the highest area under the curve with the higher sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratio for prediction of mortality among the studied patients, while ferritin, IL-6, D-Dimer and Procalcitonin have the highest area under the curve with the higher sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratio for prediction of ICU admission among the studied patients. Conclusion: IL-6, D-Dimer, ferritin, Procalcitonin, lymphocytes, and NLR on admission are significant predictors of in-hospital mortality. In contrast, ferritin, IL-6, D-Dimer, Procalcitonin, lymphocytes, NLR, and CRP on admission are significant predictors of ICU admission.
