Abstract

Background: Auto-tricycle is an evolving common means of public transport in Egypt. Additionally, motorcycle injuries represent a major but ignored emerging public health problem in developing countries and cause significant overall road traffic injuries. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the magnitude of motorized tricycle accidents and help in coming up with a detailed protocol for motorized tricycle accident management in Ismailia. Assess the types and possible classification of motor and tricycle accidents. Evaluate the difference between motorcars and motorized tricycles accidents outcomes and injuries. Subjects and Methods: A prospective observational study included 300 patients recruited through convenience sampling from the trauma centers of Suez Canal university hospital and Ismailia Medical Complex. The data was collected through a structured questionnaire containing the demographic characteristics, and the trauma severity score tool. Results: 74.3% of the patients were males. 52% of the patients were involved in motorized tricycle accidents. The most prevalent primary trauma was Head-on trauma (42%) while the most prevalent secondary injury was abrasions and contusions. Also, 44% of the patients were labeled as moderate by the trauma severity index. Most of the patients recruited required only conservative therapy (52%). Conclusions: Motorized tricycle accidents form a big portion of the cause of road traffic injuries presented at the trauma centers. However, half of these patients require conservative treatment only.
