Abstract

The problem of research lies in the continued failure of the production capacity of wheat to meet consumer needs for it and the widening of the food gap size. The research aimed to identify the most important variables affecting production and consumption of wheat, and how to reduce the size of the food gap from wheat. The research relied on descriptive and quantitative statistical analysis methods to present data, extract results, and discuss them. It was shown that the import coverage period for domestic wheat consumption increased at a rate of 24.3% between 2001 and 2021. This indicates that depending on wheat imports is increasing from year to year, which negatively affects the level of Egyptian food security. The food security factor for the wheat crop in Egypt reached about 0.14. The results indicated that the production loss in the wheat crop amounted to about 2,067 thousand tons during the average period (2019-2021), and it was found that if this loss could be reduced by 50% as a first stage, it would lead to raising the self-sufficiency rate to about 48.31%, also if early-maturing strains are used, the wheat self-sufficiency rate will increase to about 75.91%. Accordingly, the research recommends the necessity of working to redistribute Egyptian wheat imports from countries in proportion to each country's export capacity, increasing production through vertical and horizontal expansion, developing early-maturing strains, minimizing the amount of wheat loss at different stages, using modern agricultural mechanization, and providing information and guidance related t
