Motivations of Educated Rural Youth to Work in Handicrafts in Luxor Governorate

Abstract

Work in handicrafts and their satisfaction degree about it, determine the significance of the relationship between the respondents characteristics and their approval degree of the motives for working in handicrafts in general, and their satisfaction degree about their work in general, as well as to identify the problems that they face when working in handicrafts, and their suggestions to overcome it. The research was conducted in Luxor Governorate, on a sample of educated youth working in handicrafts, the size of the research sample reached 382 respondents. The questionnaire was used by personal interview with the respondents as a data collection technique. Data was collected during May and June 2022 AD, after which it was unloaded and analyzed statistically, using frequencies and percentages. The arithmetic mean, the simple correlation coefficient, and chi-square. The results were as follows: More than three-fifths of the respondents, 61.2%, have a high level of agreement with the motives for practicing handicrafts in general. 54,7% of the respondents had a moderate satisfaction level about their handicraft work in general. there was a significant relationship between some of the respondents studied independent variables and the total degree of their agreement with the motives for practicing handicraft work, and their satisfaction degree about working in it. The most important problems which facing the respondents are "lack of a health and social insurance system", "lack of associations or trade unions", "high prices of raw materials and materials needed for production", "lack of availability", "the spread of alternative modern products". The most important respondents suggestions to overcome the problems they face when working in handicrafts are "raising awareness of the importance of handicrafts", "working on the existence of associations or a handicraft workers union", and "making available and providing raw materials at reduced prices".The research ended with a set of recommendations derived from its results.
