Effect of AgNPs on germination and growth of wheat seedlings under salt stress

Abstract

A laboratory experiment was carried out at the Libyan Research Center for Biotechnology, , with the aim of studying the effect of silver nanoparticles on the germination and growth of wheat seedlings under salt stress. We applied a factorial experiment with a completely randomized design that included two concentrations of silver nano AgNPs (1, 0.001 mol) and three concentrations of salt (NaCl) (6000, 4000, 8000) ppm, in addition to the control treatment. The grains were soaked for 20 minutes before planting them in a solution of bio-synthesized nanosilver using mint leaf extract. Then, ten grains were placed in a Petri dish with three replicates for each treatment and treated with the pre-salt concentrations specified. The results showed that
• The percentage and strength of germination, the length of the seedling, root and feather, the fresh weight and the number of roots deteriorated with increasing salt concentration in the growth medium, as they reached the lowest averages when the salt concentration increased to 8000 parts per million compared to the control treatment.
• The results showed a highly significant effect at P ≥ 0.05 for seeds soaked in AgNPs compared to the control treatment on germination indicators, and the seed soaking treatment before planting at a concentration of 0.001 mol was superior to the unsoaked seeds, as it gave the highest percentage of germination strength, seedling, root, and feather length.
