Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of using of ginseng and pea pollen as natural growth promoters to improve growth performance and carcass traits of Californian growing rabbits.  A total number of 60 growing Californian rabbits (Cal), 5 weeks old and with an average initial body weight of 642.67±15.72g. The rabbits were randomly allotted to four experimental groups. The 1st group fed basal diet and served as a control. The 2nd group fed basal diet and supplemented with 250 mg ginseng/kg diet. The third group was fed basal diet and supplemented with 250 mg Bee pollen (BP)/kg diet. The fourth group was fed basal diet and supplemented with 250 mg ginseng+ 250 mg BP /kg diet. Growth performance traits and carcass characteristics were studied.
Live body weight at 9 and 13 weeks of age (marketing age) were significantly (P < 0.01) affected by using of 250 mg ginseng, 250 mg pea pollen and 250 mg ginseng+ 250 mg BP /kg diet as compared with control group < /em>. Moreover, live body weight gain and daily weight gain from 5-13 weeks of age were affected significantly (P < 0.01) by treatment with natural growth promoters as compared with the control group. Rabbits fed diets supplemented with 250 mg ginseng showed the best live body weight gain and daily weight gain as compared with the other groups. However, relative growth rate and mortality rate during the growing period were not affected significantly by using of 250 mg ginseng, 250 mg pea pollen and 250 mg ginseng+ 250 mg BP /kg diet as compared with control group < /em>. As well as, feed intake and feed conversion during the growing period were not affected significantly by using of 250 mg ginseng, 250 mg pea pollen and 250 mg ginseng+ 250 mg BP /kg diet as compared with control group < /em>. All carcass traits were not affected significantly by using of 250 mg ginseng, 250 mg pea pollen and 250 mg ginseng+ 250 mg BP /kg diet as compared with control group.
In conclusion, based on the results of the present experiment and from an economic point of view, it is advisable to supply the commercial basal rabbit diet with 250 mg ginseng or 250 mg BP/ kg diet or mixture of them  for improvement of productive performance of doe Californian rabbits and maintain their health status during the hot summer conditions in Egypt.
