Abstract

The poultry sector is extremely concerned about the rise in virulent, multidrug-resistant (MDR), avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC). In order to better understand the occurrence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of MDR E. coli isolates, as well as their virulence gene profile and related resistance genes, the current study was created. 200 samples, including 110 E. coli isolates (55%) were taken from commercial broiler farms in the Sharkia governorate of Egypt between March and October 2022 that appeared to be healthy and had just perished. Alarmingly, several antibiotic resistance traits were seen in all E. coli samples, the resistance to oxytetracycline, ampicillin, doxycycline, streptomycin, colistin, ceftriaxone, kanamycin, gentamicin, sulfamethoxazole, and norofloxacin were 74.54%, 70.90%, 67.27%, 65.45%, 54.54%, 45.45%, 29.09%, 18.18%, 12.72% and 9.09%, respectively. PCR examination for MDR E.coli isolates revealed integrase, blaSHV, and tetB genes in (100%) of examined isolates, while stx1 gene was in (20%) of examined isolates on plasmid. The findings of the present study, broilers in the study area frequently have multidrug-resistant E. coli which may pose a public health risk if it enters the food chain. The presence of bacteria should be strongly advised as harmful to health, and risk factors should be avoided.
