Background: Cadmium is a metal. It causes thyroid toxicity.
Objective: To explore the possible protective effects of quercetin and phytic acid on cadmium induced thyroid toxicity.
Materials and Methods: fifty-four rats divided into 2 groups. Group I (control), group II subdivided into subgroup IIA (they were treated with Cd injected s.c in a dose of 2 mg/kg for 2 weeks), subgroup IIB (they were treated with Cd as subgroup IIA & QUE in a dose of 500 mg/ kg for 2weeks), subgroup IIC (they were treated with Cd as subgroup IIA & phytic acid at a dose 360 mg/ kg for 2 weeks), subgroup IID (they were treated with Cd as subgroup IIA & QUE as subgroup IIB & phytic acid as subgroup IIC).
Results: Subgroup IIA showed loss of normal follicular architecture. The follicular cells showed disorganized follicle with small dark nuclei. Fused follicles with desqumation of cells, marked increase in collagen fibres between follicles by Sirius red stain and decrease in colloid area by PAS stain. There was intense positive PCNA in this group (p < 0.01). Subgroups IIB, IIC and IID showed improvement.
Conclusion: Quercetin and Phytic Acid can improve thyroid toxicity.
