Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare two drilling techniques (Osse densification and conventional) on the supporting structures of implant retained maxillary overdentures using CBCT
Materials and methods: Ten patients were selected with completely edentulous arches. Four implants were inserted in the maxilla for each patient with split-mouth technique. Two groups were enrolled, Group I: Two implants were installed on the right side using Osseodensification technique, Group II: Two implants were installed on the left side using conventional drilling technique, the ball abutments were applied to the implant fixture& pick up of metal housings was done after four months of the implant insertion. Crestal bone height changes around each implant were assessed at time of prostheses insertion, 6 & 12 months using CBCT.
Results: The result of this study was shown non statistically significant difference in the marginal bone height loss between the two groups at the end of follow-up period, also, it was reported that the least bone loss around the implants was found in group I. After 6 months, the mean difference of bone height loss was (0.4±0.097) and (0.460±0.0119) while from 6 to 12 month, the mean difference were (0.61±0.174) and (0.655±0.219) in group 1 and group 2 respectively.
Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it could be concluded that: Although Osseodensification drilling technique (Densah burs) showed better results regarding bone height changes around dental implants than conventional technique, both drilling techniques are reliable for creating osteotomies for implant placement
