Some Medico-legal Aspects of Traumatic Head Injuries Admitted to Neurosurgery Department at Sohag University Hospitals

Abstract

Background: Traumatic head injury (THI) is a cause of morbidity and mortality all over the world.
This study aimed to explore the medicolegal aspects and the pattern of THI presented to the
neurosurgery department at Sohag University Hospital. Methodology: This is a prospective, cross-sectional study that involved 581 cases admitted to neurosurgery department at Sohag University
Hospital from July to December 2022. The collected data were patient demographics, characters of
trauma, clinical presentation, radiological findings, type of treatment, and outcome. Results: The
most affected age group was children under six years old. Males accounted for 72.6% of cases.
84.5 % of head traumas were accidental; falling was the most common cause (44.2%). Mild trauma
was denoted in 73.7 % of cases. The most common radiological finding was a fissure fracture
(48.9%), and the most common site was the parietal bone (21.5%). Most of the cases were treated
conservatively. The largest number of cases experienced good recovery. Conclusion: The present
study concluded that THI were common in males from rural areas aged less than six, and the most
common cause was falling. Parietal bone fractures were the most common presentation. Most cases
had mild presentations with full recovery.
