Biopsychosocial Needs for Patients with Non Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury

Abstract

Background: Non-traumatic spinal cord injury is a neurological emergency associated with a high risk for morbidity and reduced quality of life. It is defined as any damage to the spinal cord resulting from a non-traumatic cause. Aim of the study: The current study was conducted to assess the biopsychosocial needs for patients with non- traumatic spinal cord injury. Research Design: A descriptive exploratory design was used. Study Settings: The study was conducted in the Neuro-surgery units (word and out patients clinic) at Damanhour Medical National Hospital. Subject: A purposive sample of (60) patients in outpatient clinic and neurosurgery department. Result: 93.3% of studied patients had satisfactory level of knowledge about non-traumatic spinal cord injury, 65% of them were moderate dependent for daily living activity, 40% of them had a moderate pain, 33.3% of them had mild level of anxiety, 31.7%of them had a moderate level of depression, and 48.3% of them had moderate level of social dysfunction. Conclusion: The majority of studied patient had satisfactory level of knowledge while minority of them had a moderate knowledge about non-traumatic spinal cord injury. Also less than two thirds of them were had moderate dependent on daily activity, more than one fifth of them were slight dependent and more than one tenth of them were severe dependent. Moreover two fifths of studied patients had a moderate pain, while one third of them had mild anxiety, one fifth of them had moderate anxiety and less than one third of them had a moderate depression, less than half of them had moderate level of social dysfunction. Recommendations: Developing a simplified illustrated and comprehensive Arabic booklet to be available for all patients early when diagnosed including latest information about non-traumatic spinal cord injury, its therapeutic regimen and how the patients can manage their symptoms.
