تَتَّسمُ حروفُ المعاني في العربية بتنوع مادَتِهَا اللغويَّة وغزارتها، وتنمازُ أيضاً بكثرةِ عددِهَا وأقسامِهَا، حتى أنَّ بعضَهُم أوْصلَ عددَهَا إلى مئةِ حرفٍ منحصرة في أقسامٍ خمسةٍ هي: الأحادي، والثنائي، والثلاثي، والرباعي، والخماسي (المرادي، 1992م: 29)، ولكلِّ حرفٍ منها معانٍ كثيرة. لقَدْ تناولَ الباحثون جوانِبَ عديدةً في دراستها بحَسَبِ مَنْهَجِ كل واحدٍ منهم. أمَّا بَحْثُنَا الذي بين أيدينا فسأكرسُهُ لجانبٍ محددٍ وهو الدلالةُ المركزيةُ للحرفِ وما يثيره من دلالاتٍ ثانويةٍ أو فرعيةٍ وهو ما عُبّرَت عنه بالمعنى وظلال المعنى.
      والحقيقةُ أنَّ هذا الجانبَ من الدراسةِ لم يحفلْ به كثيرٌ من علماءِ النحوِ قديمًا؛ ذلك لأنَّهم لم ينظروا للحرّفِ من حيث دلالته الأصلية والفرعية بقَدَرِ تركيزهم على الجوانبَ التصريفيةِ والإعرابيةِ له. وفي بَحْثِنَا سنحاولُ جاهدينَ الكشفَ عن الدلالةِ المركزيةِ للحرفِ والدلالات الأخرى التي تُعَدُّ ظلالًا للمعنى المركزي، عَلى وفْقِ معايير يفرضها المقامُ والسياقُ، غير منعزلةٍ عنهما تمامًا، ولعلَّ في تجاوزَ الأصلِ أحيانًا في هذه الحروف وهو ما يسمى بالانزياحِ، أو العدولِ، أو الانحرافِ، عند البلاغيين هو وسيلةُ أداءٍ فنيَّةٍ يلجأُ إليها المبدعُ؛ لتحقيقِ أهدافٍ مقصودةٍ منها: تحريكُ ذهنِ المخاطبِ ومفاجأتِهِ بغيرِ المتوقعِ، وكذلكَ إحاطةُ الدلالةِ بنوعٍ من الظلالِ، أو المعاني التي تؤسس ناتجًا إضافيًا عند القارئ (خضير، 2014م: 471)،  فالمعنى الأولُ للحرفِ هو المعنى الأصلي، أمَّا سائر المعاني الأخرى فهي ظلالٌ له، آخذين بنظرِ الاعتبار أنّه قد يَتنازعُ المعنى الأصلي أكثر من معنى وهو ما سيكشفه البحث، ومن المعايير الأخرى أيضًا تقديم الدلالة الأصلية المتفق عليها بين أغلب العلماء، معتمدين في ذلك على مصنفات القدماءِ، والمُحْدَثِينَ، والمُعاصرين. وأخيرًا ومن أجل دراسةٍ علميةٍ منهجية، قسَّمتُ البحث على تمهيدٍ، ومبحثين، وخاتمةٍ، وأبرز النتائج.
       Meaning letters in Arabic are characterized by the diversity and abundance of their linguistic material, and are also distinguished by their large number and types, to the point that some of them have reached a hundred letters confined to five categories:
      Unilateral, dual, triliteral, quadruple, and pentagonal, each letter of which has many meanings. Researchers have dealt with many aspects in studying it, according to the approach of each one of them. As for our research at hand, I will devote it to a specific aspect, which is the central connotation of the letter and the secondary or subsidiary connotations it raises, which is what I expressed in meaning and shades of meaning. The truth is that this aspect of the study did not pay much attention to it Ancient grammar scholars; This is because they did not look at the letter in terms of its original and secondary meaning as much as they focused on its morphological and grammatical aspects. In our research, we will try hard to reveal the central meaning of the letter and other meanings according to criteria imposed by the place, including the order of meanings, as we consider the first meaning of the letter to be the original meaning and all subsequent meanings to be sub-meanings to it, taking into account that there may be a dispute over the original meaning itself, which is what the research will reveal, and among the criteria The other also presents the original meaning agreed upon by most scholars, relying in this on the works of the ancients, moderns, and contemporaries.
