Abstract

Serum prolactin (PRL) level in Egyptian buffaloes during estrus was (1.66 ± 0.10 ng/ml), while PRL level in the post-ovulatory phase (one day after ovulation) was high (7.41 ± 0.70 ng/ml). Buffaloes suffering from inactive ovaries had higher serum : PRL (21.01 ± 1.02 ng/ml) at P < 0.01. A gradual increase of serum PRL levels in the first three months of pregnancy which were 6.51 ± 0.75; 6.90 ± 0.58 and 7.78 ± 1.21 ng/ml respectively. - Maximal serum PRL levels were observed in the mid stage (4th, 5th & 6th month) of pregnancy which were 10.88 ± 1.46; 10.92 ± 1.43 & 13.55 ± 1.26 ng/ml respectively. - At the late stage (7th, 8th, 9th and 10th month) of pregnancy; serum PRL levels were reduced being 8.68 ± 0.58; 9.90 ± 0.81; 8.50 ± 0.56 and 8.36 ± 0.40 ng/ml respectively. Serum PRL level at 2 days' post-partum in Egyptian buffaloes (10.08 ±1.07 ng/ml) was significantly higher than those of both periods extending from 5-13 days (6.97 ±0.60 ng/ml) and from 15-25 days (6.53 ±1.05 ng/ml) postpartum at P < 0.05.
