Abstract

Adequate control of nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy is essential and may be viewed as a challenge for the oncology nurse. This study was designed with aim to identify the antiemetic effect of dietary modification and relaxation regimen on reducing nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy. The study was carried out at the Oncology Department of Shebin El-Kom University Hospital. The sample consisted of 60 adult cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. They were randomly allocated into two equal groups. The first group [experimental] received instructions about relaxation and diet modification, while second group [control] followed the hospital routine of care. Data were collected using two tools namely: an assessment sheet and a follow up sheet. The assessment sheet was used to identify the patient's sociodemograpgic and medical characteristics, dietary pattern and assessment of nausea and vomiting. The follow up sheet was used to assess the antiemetic effect of both relaxation regimen and diet modification, the patient's skill development and compliance to the given instructions as well as the outcome of the patient's condition. Findings of the study revealed a significant antiemetic effect of the used regimen manifested in reducing the frequency of nausea and vomiting episodes, the onset and occurrence of nausea and a decreased incidence of dehydration.
