Abstract

The present work was conducted aiming to study the health profile of mothers and children in El-Zohra village and some related villages. The study was conducted through a cross sectional approach in El-Zohra village and four small-related villages. All families in which there are married females aged 15- <45 Ys were included in the study sample. Also children aged 0-< 18 years were also included in the study. An interviewing questionnaire was used to collect data about antenatal care, and family planning service utilization. Data concerning breast feeding, vaccination status and morbidity in the last three months were collected for children aged 0 < 12 months. For children aged 1 - 5 years information about presence of handicapping condition, morbidity in the last three months, also weight and height for those children were measured. The results of the present work revealed that 75% of the studied mothers were illiterate, 73 % had received antenatal care, 73 % of them delivered at home and 67.5% Daya delivered them. The study also showed that 80% of those women were currently using contraceptives. It was also noticed that 78% of infants in the studied villages were exclusively breast-fed, 82.7 % had completed their vaccination schedule for their age, 31.7% had diarrheal diseases and 8.7 % had ARI in the past three months prior to the investigation. Among children aged 1 - 5 years, 3.1 % were disabled, 23.1 % were stunted, 11.5 % were wasted and 9.6% were underweight. Regarding school aged children, 14.6% never attended school and the rate of dropouts among them was 10.5 %.
