Abstract

This research aimed to identify the relationship between environmental management systems and reduce potential environmental impacts. The main objective of the research is achieved by shedding light on a set of sub-objectives represented in testing the relationship between environmental performance, application of comprehensive environmental quality standards, recycling and treatment strategy, adherence to occupational safety and health standards, sustainability of the work environment, environmental monitoring and auditing and reducing environmental impacts potential.  This research relied on the analytical descriptive approach to reach its objectives specified by the researcher, and this approach was built on combining theoretical study and field study to reach an effective framework that links them to each other. The researcher designed a survey list that was distributed to the 47 individuals involved in the research variables. All survey lists were valid for statistically analyzing the results of the answers contained therein. The general results of the research showed the validity, and effectiveness of the proposed research model. Among the most important findings of this research:  The research concluded that there is a moderate direct correlation between the independent variable "environmental management systems" and the dependent variable "limiting potential environmental impacts" in only two dimensions (compliance with occupational safety and health standards and environmental monitoring and auditing). Then, the main hypothesis of the study (the negation hypothesis) was partially rejected, which states that there is no substantial effect of environmental management on reducing potential environmental impacts in the coefficient. There is no statistically significant effect of environmental performance, the application of comprehensive quality standards, recycling strategy, and the sustainability of the work environment on reducing potential environmental impacts. The fourth and sixth sub-hypotheses were rejected, as it was proven that there was a statistically significant effect of compliance with occupational safety and health standards, and environmental monitoring and auditing on reducing potential environmental impacts in laboratories. The most important research recommendations were: Training workers, directing their environmental awareness, and developing their skills and abilities on how to improve their work. Organizations interest in improving their environmental performance as a strategic option that enables them to survive, excel and be sustainable. The need for support, assistance and commitment from the top management of the organizations to implement and disseminate the concepts of ISO 140001
