Abstract

Siwa Oasis is one of the promising areas in the comprehensive development programs. It is one of the five most important oases in the Western Desert. It has a rare environmental diversity and charming natural elements. Siwa Oasis is located southwest of Marsa Matruh. It is a closed depression with low sea level. The only source of water in the oasis is groundwater. The mismanagement of wastewater and the use of agricultural drainage systems that are not suitable for the topography of the oasis, led to an increase in the groundwater level, accordingly to inundation and salinization of the soil, and thus a decrease in the agricultural productivity. The research aimed to identify the importance of applying environmental management systems to maximize the environmental and economic effects of the covered agricultural drainage technology in Siwa Oasis. As well as, discovered the role of the covered agricultural drainage technology in increasing agricultural production and agricultural sustainability. In order to achieve the objectives of the research, the practical agricultural drainage technique was applied in Khamisa farm in Al-Maraqi area, which is one of the affected areas. A questionnaire was designed and distributed to officials, agricultural engineers, researchers in the Agricultural Directorate and Desert Research Center, as well as engineers in the Ministry of Irrigation. The descriptive analytical approach was used to complete the field study. The statistical tests were used to test the validity of the hypotheses and answer the study's inquiries. The results of the study concluded that there is a statistically significant relationship between the application of environmental management systems, and the maximization of the environmental effects of covered agricultural drainage techniques. The results showed also that the covered agricultural drainage technique achieves additional income by cultivating some crops as a result of providing an area comparing to that of the open agricultural drainage technique. In the light of the study results, several recommendations were concluded the most important of which are; focusing on the application of environmental management systems through covered agricultural drainage techniques to achieve economic and environmental returns.
