Abstract

Understanding the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) monofilament biocompatibility, biodegradation resistance and ease of handling get great attention nowadays. In this study, Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) was used as the matrix, whereas cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) was utilized as a nanofiller to produce nanocomposite fibers (PVDF/CNC). The concentrations of nanofillers (CNC) were 0, 1wt.%, 2 wt.%, and 3 wt.%. The under-study filaments were subjected to a specific treatment for enhanced performance. Structural and mechanical properties were determined using DSC, XRD, and optical polarizing microscopy. The melting temperature, glass transition temperature, crystallinity, birefringence, and the different molecular orientations were measured for the samples under study. Results confirmed that the interaction of PVDF and CNC was strong and led to enhancing the different physical properties of the used nanocomposite fibers in this study. This finding might be considered a result of nanocrystal accumulation.
