The New Valley Governorate ranks first among the governorates of the republic in terms of the total cultivated area and overall production of winter onions outside the valley. Therefore, studying the winter onion crop in the New Valley Governorate is of great importance. The governorate has a relative advantage in producing the winter onion crop. The research aims to assess the current production and marketing situation and identify the main challenges facing the onion crop in the New Valley Governorate. The ultimate goal is to develop necessary policies to overcome these obstacles and enhance the production and marketing of this strategic crop.
The results of the general time trend analysis of onion crop productivity indicate a statistically significant annual increase of approximately 124.25 acres, representing about 6.73% of the average annual cultivated onion area, estimated at around 1845 acres. The yield per acre also showed a statistically significant increase of about 0.158 tons per acre, with an annual average increase of about 1.19% of the overall average. The total production change is attributed to the combined effect of changes in both the cultivated area and the yield per acre. This indicates that the majority of the increase in total onion production is influenced by economic factors, notably the farm price of onions, net return per acre, and relative profitability compared to other competing crops. Analyzing the average total costs of the onion crop in the New Valley Governorate revealed a statistically significant increase of approximately 517.13 Egyptian pounds, with an annual average increase of about 10.41% of the overall average. Additionally, the total revenue from the onion crop showed a statistically significant increase of about 1629.8 Egyptian pounds, with an annual average increase of about 8.6%.
