Abstract

Problems of groundwater and hydrological systems of particular sites are commonly investigated with geoelectrical and georadar techniques. This paper presents the results of the application of geoelectrical resistivity sounding, dipole-dipole Imaging and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) techniques for outlining the presence of draining water and groundwater at the Basateen cemetery area. A geoelectric resistivity survey using Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) technique was performed at 3 points through the site in order to investigate the vertical extent of the subsurface sequence and the degree of saturation. A total of 9 dipole-dipole imaging profiles were conducted to follow up the lateral distribution of saturated parts by drain water, and confirmed by 6 GPR profiles with 100- and 200- MHz antennae. The qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the acquired VES's, dipole-dipole imaging profiles and GPR profiles showing several levels of saturations at the studied site. The radar signals enabled to identify the subsurface reflectors. The results of GPR, VES's and Resistivity imaging showed a good agreement and integrated interpretations supported by local geology. A chemical analysis of the drain water and Ein El-Khaiala spring has done, to determine the main source of the drain water and the infiltrated water at the studied site
