ESTIMATING THE SUBSURFACE STRUCTURES AROUND ACTIVE FAULTS AT SOUTHWEST CAIRO USING MAGNETOTELLURIC SOUNDING METHOD

Abstract

It is important to delineate the geological structures around active faults, especially to estimate the fault activity. Magnetotelluric sounding (MTS) method was applied to investigate active subsurface structures which are covered by the relatively thin Quaternary layers in Dahshour-Qatrani region. MT profiles were carried out across suspected fault(s), where one of the damaging earthquake (such as the October 12, 1992 Dahshour) occurred in the southern westpart of Cairo. The results showed that the induction arrows (tipper) referred to conductive zones which indicate the active faults in the study area. 2D-MT data to invert resistivity, phase and tipper (induction arrows) simultaneously was employed. This study focuses on using MTS as an efficient tool to study the conductivity anomalies and faults in relation to recent earthquakes in the study area..
