Hindrance in the preformation probability of the light third particle in collinear ternary fission channels (Revised)

Abstract

The preformation probability of the light nucleus generated during the preliminary step of the ternary fission of the heavy 252Cf nucleus is investigated. Considering collinear cluster tripartition kinematics, the relative yields and preformation probabilities of the light 4,6He, 10Be and 14C clusters released in the accompanied ternary fission channels of 252Cf are estimated. Based on the potentials obtained in terms of the Skyrme-SLy4 energy density functionals of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approach is applied to compute the penetration probability of the various nuclei participating in the ternary fission channels. The results demonstrate that the optimal overall excitation energy of the heavy fragments generated in the ternary fission channels is in the region of 3 - 4 MeV. The anticipated probabilities of formation of light nuclei based on collinear configuration are compared to those obtained upon employed the corresponding equatorial arrangement. Calculations using excitation energy greater than the optimal values indicate relatively low preformation probability. As the mass number of emitted light clusters increases, the predicted preformation probabilities decrease exponentially. Generally, the collinear configuration indicates hindrance in both estimated yield and preformation probability, relative to the corresponding equatorial configuration.
