Verification of Numerical Modelling of Tunnel-Shaft Connection under Static Loading

Abstract

Needless to say, tunnels and shafts are versatile structures that are used for solving many problems all over the world. Tunnels are used as horizontal tubes, transferring from point to point beneath earth, and shafts are vertical tubes, which used as emergency structures, and for other usages. In this paper, a verification was done for finite element model of the connection between tunnel and shaft under static loading. This connection is a 3D problem which can be a weak point, and must be cared for in both design and construction processes. Tunnel-shaft connection 17A between Kolleyet El-Banat and Al-Ahram stations, from Greater Cairo Metro Line 3, Phase 2, was used as the case study of this paper. Full details of FEM model inputs were introduced and stages of construction were mentioned. Results from the model were verified using settlement monitoring results. After that, settlement results from model were also discussed and some graphs were provided representing them.
