Abstract

This study focuses on the punctuation in Arabic Language. We dealt with a question unknown to most people and that is the way punctuation system was borrowed from French and introduced into the Arabic language. This borrowing occurred by the end of the 19th century. Arabic however did have a punctuation system previously known as the system of Waqf and ibtida' as a means to help the reader's understanding. This system, of which we find relics in the Holy Quran, disappeared with time. We then proceeded to the period of the borrowing undertaken by Aḥmad Zakî Basha. The first codification of the punctuation system in Arabic took place in 1912, and was initiated by Zakî Bacha. We observe the manner by which the first author of this reform applied the punctuation rules to his own texts, particularly in Ibn Zaydûn, published in 1914. This codification was later followed by another codification in 1931 initiated by the Education ministry.
