Abstract

This paper aims to study one of the means that politicians resort to, which is "the appeal," in a number of speeches by five leaders and politicians, namely: Augusto Pinochet Ugarte (Chile), Patricio Aylwin Azócar (Chile), Jorge Rafael Videla, (Argentina), Raúl Ricardo Alfonsín (Argentina) and Adolfo Suárez González (Spain). The appeal performs several functions in political discourse, the most important of which are: opening the speech and identifying the attendees or the persons to whom the speech is addressed, organizing ideas and paragraphs within a speech, attracting attention, and renewing the reception process. These purposes play a major role in keeping the channels of communication open between the sender and the listeners. This study will examine to what extent the aforementioned politicians have benefited from this method.
