Effect of Okra, Taro Powders and Their blend on Rats Fed on High Fat Diet

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of high fat diet enriched with okra, taro powder by the percent of (2.5 and 5%) and their mixture 5% by (1:1) on rats. Forty-two (42) male albino rats (Sprague - dawly strain) weighting 150-160g used in this study and assigned to 7 groups each(6rats). The negative control group received basal diet all the experimental period, the other experimental groups including 36 rats were fed on high fat diet for 3 weeks to induced hyperlipidemic rats. Then, the tested plants were added to the basal diet for (4 weeks). Feed intake, body weight gain, and feed efficiency ratio did not show significant difference at (p≤ 0.05) comparing with control (+ve). Lipid profile (T.C, T.G, LDL, VLDL and A.I) showed significant decreases comparing positive control group. HDL was significant increase. For liver functions (AST, ALT and ALP) were significant decrease comparing with control (+ve). MDA was significantly decrease, but TAC was significantly increase. Histopathological examination of liver showed that feeding on diet containing the tested plants for 4 weeks improved the histological structure of rat liver. So, we recommended more interested by these vegetables for its huge benefits for many parameters specially lipid profile.
